One of the highlights of our Winter 2017 trip was a quick visit to the stunning Tawhai Falls a.k.a “Gollum’s Pool” 🙂
You can probably tell that I’m completely obsessed with The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, a fantasy epic that I’ve adored for so many years. I was really in love with J. R. R. Tolkien‘s stories that’s why it feels surreal to actually walk on the same ground as the Middle Earth cast members. As silly as it sounds but my inner fan girl has been awakened. So if you’re a die-hard fan, you need to emotionally prepare yourself.
Located within the Tongariro National Park, you can reach Tawhai Falls through an easy walking track which takes about 15-20 minutes walk from the car park.
We’re in the winter season at the moment, so it was actually too cold to walk around but because we’re so excited to be heading to the waterfalls, the cold didn’t bother us anyway. We’re actually fortunate with the timing because it was raining a couple of days but during our visit we had a lovely warm day.
Remember that scene where Gollum was catching a fish while Faramir and his men aim their arrows at him? A lot of you probably won’t even recall but it’s filmed here at this 13-meter high curtain drop. I am so happy because I was able to cross another one off my list.
A photo for a keepsake. We had the waterfalls to ourselves!
I thought to myself that it may not be as extravagant as the other waterfalls in New Zealand but its got so much character. I can’t recommend it enough!
There’s this moment where I was so drawn to the waters and I just knew that it’s stealing my heart little by little. Trust me guys, it’s gorgeous. 🙂
And because I’d like to show you more of what happened, here’s a video that sums up our little adventure:
I am beyond impressed by Gollum’s pool. So glad that we went because having that awesome connection with nature was everything. NZ just meshes with who we are.
It’s been a ton of fun guys! Throughout the years, the LOTR Trilogy lives on! Cheers to more spontaneous adventures my precious! <3
